Beyond the headline benefits of purchase protection and travel insurance, many credit cards include a range of secondary benefits that most cardholders never discover. These benefits don't require any special activation — they're available to any cardholder who knows to ask for them.
Roadside Assistance
Many credit cards include roadside assistance coverage — towing, flat tire service, battery jump-start, lockout service, and fuel delivery. Coverage is typically limited to a set number of service calls per year (often 4–6) and may have a per-call limit or require you to pay for the service and submit for reimbursement.
This benefit is most valuable if you don't already have roadside assistance through your auto insurance, AAA, or a vehicle manufacturer's program. If you do have other coverage, the card's benefit is redundant.
Price Protection
Price protection (also called price guarantee or price match) reimburses the difference if an item you purchased with your card goes on sale at a lower price within a set period — typically 60–90 days. If you buy a TV for $800 and it drops to $650 within the coverage window, you could claim a $150 reimbursement.
Important caveat: many issuers have eliminated or significantly restricted price protection in recent years. Check your current card's benefit guide to confirm whether this benefit is still active.
Note
Price Protection Is Declining
Several major issuers have eliminated price protection from their card benefits in recent years. Before counting on this benefit, verify it's still active on your specific card by checking the current benefit guide or calling the benefits administrator.
Return Protection
Return protection allows you to return eligible items to your card's benefit administrator — not the retailer — if the retailer won't accept the return within a set period (typically 90 days from purchase). Coverage limits are typically $250–$500 per item, with an annual maximum.
This benefit is useful when a retailer's return window has closed or the retailer has a no-return policy. It does not apply to items that are damaged, used, or missing original packaging.
Concierge Services
Premium cards often include concierge services — a 24/7 phone or digital service that can assist with restaurant reservations, event tickets, travel arrangements, and other lifestyle requests. The concierge doesn't pay for these services; it assists with the logistics.
For frequent travelers or people who value time savings, concierge services can be genuinely useful. For most cardholders, they're a rarely-used perk.
How to Find Your Card's Benefits
The complete list of your card's benefits is in the benefit guide — a document that is typically available on your issuer's website, in your online account portal, or by calling the number on the back of your card. The benefit guide is different from your card agreement; it specifically covers the insurance and protection benefits.
Review your benefit guide annually. Benefits change, and knowing what you have before you need it is the only way to use it effectively.
