Payment history is the single largest factor. One missed payment can drop a good score significantly. Automate every minimum payment — not to avoid interest, but to protect your history. Late payments stay on your report for seven years.
Automate minimumsCredit utilisation is the ratio of your balance to your credit limit. Above 30% signals risk. Above 50% causes significant score damage. Pay down balances or request a credit limit increase — both reduce the ratio.

Credit history length rewards longevity. Do not close old credit cards — even unused ones. The average age of your accounts matters. A closed account reduces your average history length and can lower your score.
Keep old accounts openEach hard inquiry (credit application) temporarily reduces your score. Multiple applications in a short period signal financial stress. Space applications at least six months apart. A mix of credit types is mildly beneficial.

One in five credit reports contains an error. Pull your report from all three bureaus annually. Dispute any inaccuracy — incorrect late payments, accounts that are not yours, or balances that are wrong. Errors can be removed within 30 days.
Pull and reviewIf your score is damaged, the most effective repair strategy is twelve consecutive months of on-time payments with utilisation below 30%. This does not erase history, but it progressively outweighs it.
