Add all income sources: salary, freelance, rental, dividends, side income. Use net (after-tax) figures. If income varies, use a three-month average. This is your inflow baseline.
Calculate inflowsList every outflow: fixed expenses, variable spending, debt payments, subscriptions, irregular costs (averaged monthly). Include savings and investments as outflows — they are allocations, not leftovers.

Subtract total outflows from total inflows. A positive number means you are building. A negative number means you are eroding. A zero means you are treading water — which is not the same as building.
Find your numberA healthy cash flow surplus is typically 15–20% of net income. If you are below this, identify the three largest discretionary outflows as the first targets for reduction.

The moment your surplus is calculated, automate its allocation. Direct it to an emergency fund, investment account, or debt payment before it becomes available for discretionary spending.
Automate itCash flow changes with life. A monthly ten-minute review catches drift early. A quarterly review adjusts allocations to reflect changes in income, expenses, or goals.
